They are still there in 1901.

EDIT Girls there also in 1891 under Uram

Do you know when/where their Father died pampoen?

There is a H E Groom heading to Natal 1892 (age 38)

I can see no deaths for either Henry Edward Groom nor his wife Frances in the UK - nor, aside from the children sightings in census, can I find marriages or deaths in the UK for any of the children.

Having just checked outgoing passenger lists Gertrude and Mabel travelled to Natal, South Africa on 17/3/1892 plus Claud and Charles went to Natal on 7/7/1906 - so looks like further details regarding this family are in South Africa.

Thank you yes the father and children all eventually sailed to South Africa. My maternal grandmother was Constance Harriet Groom. However I can find no trace of the mother France's travelling to South Africa.

Since the family were clearly constantly 'on the move' can only suggest that Frances died somewhere overseas between 1886 and 1892 - certainly not in the UK anyway.

Can't help thinking 'poor woman' with 8 children in 11 years!  One wonders if her death (wherever it was) was due to childbirth.

Hi Annette that is what I was thinking. I am wondering if she did not die at childbirth along with the baby Elizabeth Ann. Any chance you can check for a death for a France's Elizabeth Groom in March 1886 in Chester. Regards Derek
