Malmesbury Hospital patient records 1918 - NUTTALL
« on: Wednesday 05 July 17 17:08 BST (UK) »
I am researching a man from Macclesfield, John Nuttall, who was discharged from the Army (7th Cheshire Regiment, service no 4179) in 1916 due to ill-health. According to local newspaper reports, he died at Malmesbury Cottage Hospital on either 21st or 26th November 1918, due to pneumonia and heart failure.

I understand that there are no patient records for Malmesbury Cottage Hospital at the Wiltshire and Swindon Archives for this period but wonder if, as an ex-serviceman, he was actually in Malmesbury Red Cross Hospital, for which records exist?

I am baffled as to why he was in Malmesbury, as he was discharged at Oswestry on 31 March 1916 and had lived with his family in Macclesfield prior to joining the Army.

Is there anyone with local knowledge who could look for information about this man?
Many thanks.

In his military records for 1915 it states his address as 3 St John's Bridge, Malmsbury.
Malmsbury Cottage Hospital was registered as a Red Cross emergency Hospital on 26thJuly 1916

Oh - now that's a bad case of assuming... he joined the local Macclesfield regiment and his next of kin was his mother who lived in Macclesfield so I didn't notice his address hidden behind the DISCHARGED stamp...
Many thanks for pointing that out.

Would still like to know if there is any information about his stay in hospital though.

If Malmesbury Cottage Hospital was the same place as Malmesbury Red Cross Hospital, Swindon & Wiltshire Archives has patient admission records for the Red Cross Hospital 1916-1918, ref J1/177/100 if anyone is able to do a look-up for me.

The Archive will conduct a search for you for a fee, it's usually between £20/30 per hour.
There is quite a lot of information on his health in his Military record it appears he was suffering Vulvular Disease of the heart and Anemia in 1915. 3 St John's Bridge, Malmsbury were he was living was a row of 3 Almshouses sited at the entrance to a hospital.
On 10/3/1916 his record stated he had
VDH and dilated right side of heart
Heart apex beat 6th space ripple line.
Right limit cardiac dullness mid sterne line.
Apical thrice.
Apical presystolic murmur.
Apical first sound very short.
Declared unfit for Military Service.
25/6/1917 He went in front of a medical board in Stockport and was declared permanently and totally unfit for military service.
Perhaps he was too unwell to return home to his Mum in Macclesfield and needed nursing care at Malmesbury were he later passed away.

Just seems odd, if he went all the way from Malmesbury to Stockport to go before the medical board and was too unwell to return to his family in Macclesfield, why go all the way back to Malmesbury to be admitted to hospital? Why not be admitted to a hospital in the Stockport/Macclesfield/Manchester area?

Unfortunately we have no funding so can't pay for the research. The question of when he was admitted to Malmesbury Hospital will have to remain a mystery. Thanks anyway.
