William Hampton, Dudley b. 1822
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 05:28 BST (UK) »

I am hoping someone with better access to records (I'm in Australia) can help me find a marriage (and anything else) for the parents of William Hampton (b. Dudley, 1822, d. 1892 Upton on Severn).  I know quite a lot about William and his descendants, but am struggling to get any further back than the names of his parents (and some siblings).

Here is what I do know about them:

  * William's marriage certificate (to Eliza Price) in 1838 states his father is John Hampton, Nailer.  As
it doesn't say John is deceased, I assume he is still alive at that time.

  * On the 1841 census, William is in Tower St, Dudley.  His mother, Honor, is shown as the Head, so I
assume that his father John has died between 1838 and the time of the census.

  * Honor(a) Hampton appears once more in the 1851 census, giving her birthplace as Rowley,
Staffordshire around 1781.  She dies in Jan 1854 - I have seen a copy of her death registration.

If anyone can help locate John Hampton & Honor's marriage and Honor's maiden name, it would be much appreciated.

Others doing the same research have her as Honour Bridge, marrying John Hampton, 1804 in Kingswinford.  I find it hard to wrap my head around this, as neither of them were from there (as far as I know), and I can't find any births to John & Honour before 1810 (which is long gap).

Any and all help is appreciated.

You should never assume that someone is still alive as they are not marked as deceased on a marriage certificate.  The question would not have been asked at the time of the marriage.

Apart from the siblings on the 1841 census ( John, William, Elizabeth and Matilda), another possible sibling that I can see is :

Diana   bap 25 Dec 1810 (Dudley) parents John and Honor

And another son John buried at Dudley on 1 Mar 1812 (son of John and Honor).

There is also a burial of John HAMPTON aged 52 on 17 Oct 1830 at Dudley (residence Dudley). A possibility for William's father, although I can see it is a very common name in the area!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your help. :)

I thought it would be helpful to clarify that I have 6 siblings for William (Diana, John, Elizabeth, Matilda, another John and possibly Joseph).  I have done a bit of research on each of them to see if I can find anything helpful (extended family visiting at census time, neighbours, witnesses on marriages), but I haven't found anything so far.  Not that there is nothing there - a fresh set of eyes is always helpful. :)

I would like to know others thoughts on the marriage of John Hampton / Honour Bridge and the lack of any children (that I can find) between 1804 and 1810?  (Joseph - the possible son was buried in 1808).  Is there a gap in the available records between this time?

Thanks again for the helpful posts Jackie & Maddy. :)

Thanks Jackie.  That's interesting as one of William's sons is Timothy & I wondered where that came from.
