Who is the Uncle - (1881+1891 census look up assist)
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 11:36 BST (UK) »

Hi
The attached is part of a long letter published in the Chatfield Democrat newspaper (Minnesota) in the 5th Dec 1885 edition, written by my relative Jennie McLarty.

Jennie's family emigrated from Scotland to Minnesota in the 1850's and is obviously over for a visit to the UK and staying with an uncle at 13 Goldswong Terrace, Cranmer St. Nottingham.

It would be great if I could find out who this uncle was.  I am ruling out him being a 'McLarty', as all her McLarty uncles had emigrated, bar one who lived in Ayrshire.

I therefore think he is on her mothers side - 'McNeish'.

Jennies mother was called Sarah McNeish and her obituary states that she was born on the 1st March 1824 in Dumfries 'where she spent her youth'.  Sarah married Malcolm McLarty in Liverpool in 1844, but were on the Ayr census of 1851 (they then emigrated in 1856).

I think the answer could hopefully be on either the 1881 or 1891 census for the Nottingham address, if someone could please check I would be very grateful.

Thank you.

Not at that address but there is a William McNesh/McNeish in Nottingham in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. A lace manufacturer born Maxwelltown (Dumfries) circa 1838.

Have you found Jennie on the incoming passenger list as there may be a name given as to who she's heading to visit?

Yes, it looks likely the surname was McNeish.  On 16 July 1886 Mrs McNeish of 13 Goldswong Terrace, Cranmer Street, Nottingham advertised in the Stamford Mercury for a general servant.
