I want to find the link between family name Curley and Roscommon in Ireland?
My great, great grandfather was Joseph Curlie who in lived at Grove Street. Wantage, Berkshire in the 1800's He married Sophia Collins. My family have always believed that he or his father was from Roscommon?

Have you also found the family as Kerley - or similar?

1861 736/89/43 has him transcribed as Kerby on one site but it reads Kerly.

What is his father's name on his marriage certificate?

I would think that this is him in 1851

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGKM-H4X with parents Luke and Harriett Kerley.

As you can see Luke is also born in Berkshire so if there is a Roscommon connection it is before then.

The 1749 Elphin census has a Curley family in the Parish of Ardcarn which is between Boyle and Carrick on Shannon. The index of names for the census shows several that could be alternative spellings of Curley. Family search shows  many Curley births in Roscommon from 1789 onwards. Christenings are shown as being in Drum which is between Ballinasloe and Athlone . Residence is shown as St Peters Westmeath. They include a Joseph Curly (sic) christened on 18 August 1792. All this proves nothing other than Curl(e)ys were in Roscommon so is an avenue for further research.

I have Curleys in my line and they were from the border of Roscommon and Galway near Ballinasloe
There were several families in the area all unrelated and referred to by ancestors names or house locations to distinguish them.

There is a tree on line that states that Joseph's father was named Luke and that Luke was born in Coxwell, Berkshire on Oct 30 1809; you would first need to confirm his father's / parent's names especially if his marriage certificate states a different one.

If you are looking for a family pre1800 the search will be very difficult given the lack of records and accurate information
