Do you mean that John was named on the marriage certificate as 'father'? In reply 9 you said the witnesses were a relative of Sophia and an unrelated person.

I have searched around again - the only John I can see is this one. You could try this death certificate.
I can't see him in 1841 and neither can I see a birth for a Joseph who would fit.

Thanks once again for your research. Sorry to have been misleading. I have Joseph Curly's  marriage certificate   At the Baptist Chapel Wantage and it states:

Married 24th December 1859 Joseph Curley 21 years to Sophia Collins 21 years
Joseph Groom      Father John Curley Farm Laborer
Sophia's Father Thomas Collins       Farm Laborer (deceased)

witnesses/ in the presence of the mark of Peter Collins and the mark of Emma Attwell (I think, cant read the writing)

I still favour Luke as his father for all the reasons outlined by amongd earlier and it is very difficult to follow up due to the lack of parish records.
I have tried to see if there is a female Kerly/Curly marriage in case he was illegitimate or mother was widowed and therefore he could be under a different surname in 1851 but nothing leaps out of the censuses.

I would think that the death of certificate of the John Kerly could be useful, to perhaps confirm or eliminate him from your research.

It does happen that names are recorded in error for whatever reason.

It is a useful site for checking mother's maiden name. You need to register - free and then click on 'Order certificates online' ( do this just to check with no commitment).

You can also search deaths. I did this to find John Kerly and it gave his age which again is useful to know.

This site is a fairly new initiative and is a great help.
