Darn, just the one source. Not looking forward to buying another subscription...

Does anyone have any leads on Richard Richards' (b 1777) parents? I'd really like to trace my surname further back.

It could be a match; the dates make sense. I'm wary however because of how many Richard Richards were born in Devon around the same decade.

Using familysearch, I found this:
Name   Richard Richards
Gender   Male
Christening Date   28 Mar 1777
Christening Place   TRALLONG,BRECON,WALES
Father's Name   Richard Pritchard
Mother's Name   Elizabeth
Citing this Record
"Wales Births and Baptisms, 1541-1907," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X114-JVT : 5 December 2014), Richard Richards, 28 Mar 1777; citing TRALLONG,BRECON,WALES, reference ; FHL microfilm 104,500.

Which could also be a match, although being christened the day he was born might be a stretch (perhaps my family recorded his christening as his birth date?). I'm having a hard time locating the Tavistock baptismal record on familysearch.

Pritchard is Welsh patronym. Ap Richard = son of Richard. Easily Anglicised as Richards.

I have come across other records which appear to suggest baptism on day of birth.

Original post gives Richard Nathaniel Richards's date of birth as  27 Marchv1777

There is a Tavistock baptism record and a Trallong record for Richard Richards. Which one, if either, is for my Richard? Could they be records for the same person? Both list the parents as Richard and Elizabeth (hardly uncommon names though).
