Looking for Jessie Finch
« on: Thursday 13 July 17 07:16 BST (UK) »
I can find very little information about this lady. Jessie Finch married Thomas Phillips Burt in Q1 1923 and wedding recorded for Stow Reg District. Thomas was 57 at the time and as far as I know it was his first marriage. As for Jessie, Finch may be her maiden name or if she was a widow it may have been a previous husband's name. Thomas died in Feb 1940 and left the family home in Stowmarket to Jessie as well with a cottage in Norton and another in Ixworth. I have seen a document dated 1945 which Jessie has signed when she sold the cottage in 1945, so her date of death would be after that.
Originally I followed an Ancestry hint for a Jessie Finch from Sudbury and found a Jessie born in Gestingthorpe, Essex, very close to Sudbury. However, when following that lead I found a gravestone photo showing that this Jessie Finch died in 1915. I have tried to order a wedding certificate, but the click to buy for this doesn't activate, so perhaps the original is not available.
Any help or suggestions would be most welcome.

To order the cert, make sure you give all the details exactly as in the GRO Index, and that you tick the box for a marriage cert (so many of us have tried to order the wrong one!)

I think it is the only way that you will find out if she'd been married before.

Use https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/  it will cost you no more than £9-25 wherever in the World you need it posting to.

The 1979 death is her - Probate record shows she was of  54 Bridge Street, Stowmarket.
Same address as Thomas' Probate in 1940.
She died 5th March 1979.

Thanks so much Carol and AMBLY for that info about death date. I looked for deaths on BMD and didn't see that one.

Hi Carol, I haven't got the '39 Register. Which site gives access please and how does it compare with Ancestry? My subscription renewal is due and am wondering whether to use an alternative source.

I have access to both- one has records that the other doesn't!

Thanks. I may change to get the extra info. Love the photo even if they have no front teeth!
