I can't see the full report but a newspaper snippet shows that William Charles Went died in a road accident after stepping off a narrow pavement to allow a woman to pass safely - 'Man's Courtesy Costs Him His Life'.
It is very sad.

He was a 31 yr old railway porter, of West Hill, Reading.  The accident took place in Southampton St, Reading, but he died subsequently in hospital.  Inquest verdict: accidental death.  The foreman of the jury remarked "It is exceedingly sad that a man should lose his life through an act of courtesy".

(Per various newspaper reports published in early December 1936).

This is getting very interesting I knew the details of his accident having been brought up going to my nans house in Reading and know the stretch of pavement in Southampton Street where it happened the path narrows from roughly 12-15 feet to 4 feet.

Thank you very much for your interest in my family

Many thanks KGarrad, giggsycat, Heywood, avm228, Annette7, candrjm, your efforts have enlightened me about the history of a big part of my mother's ancestors how they came to Reading though probably because my grandfather met my grandmother in Henley so they were originally from Gloucester.

Cheers and again many thanks.
