marriage entry Highworth, Wilts 1603
« on: Saturday 15 July 17 07:01 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I have an entry for a marriage in Highworth, Wilts 28-7-1603 which the IGI interprets as (a);
Thomas Edwards to Elizabeth Wetford

whereas the WiltsFHS says (b);
Thomas Weaver to Elizabeth Welford.

The original is shown below. Can anyone please decipher correctly please? I'm having difficulty in reading the text also cannot see a date.
Edited; I should have added that the WiltsFHS says; Thoma Edwards alias Weaver - still cannot see where this is written.

Most of the entry is fairly clear and agrees with Wilts FHS.

Julij xxviijo celebratae erant nuptiae inter Thoma
Edwardes als weaver et Elizabeth welford

July 28 the celebration of marriage between Thomas
Edwardes alias weaver and Elizabeth welford

The month is hard to read exactly but does contain an l.  The next entry is in October.

xxviij = 28 in English style Roman numerals.

als = alias

The third letter of her surname is looped so more likely to be l than t.

ADDED:

Having looked more closely at the Latin, I think celebratae erant nuptiae should be translated as:

...the marriage was celebrated...  or   ...the marriage has been celebrated...

horselydown86,

Thank you very kindly for the translation.

Some of the registers get harder to decipher the further back one goes.

Much appreciated.
