SURKIS / SURKISS family Elsworth
« on: Monday 17 July 17 18:38 BST (UK) »
My 5xGt Grandparents were John Surkis and Elizabeth Childs.
They married in 1765 at Elsworth.

How do I search further back in time to find their births and parents, please?

Also, I note the surname Surkitt.  Would this be a variant of Surkiss?

Thanks in advance.

My grandmother was a Surkitt from Hunts. I've not found any connection to Surkiss.

Oh, that closes that possibility then, David.
Thanks for your input.   :)

Hi Carol,

My 5 x G Grandparents were John Circus and Elizabeth Childs from Elsworth and married in 1765 too!

Their son Robert is my line, how about you?

I'll need to dig out my records and see what I have on them and anything about their parents.

Hi Cousin!

My line is through their son, John, b.1766, who married Susannah Endersby in 1793.

Are you descended through Robert's daughter, Mary, by any chance?  She married John Mansfield in 1831).  More recently, this Mansfield line crosses through my in-laws tree, too.

Also, do you have a public tree on Ancestry? - I've one, but it's not complete by any stretch.

I'm keen to hear from you, either by pm or directly on this thread.

Regards.  Carole

Hi Carol,

Great to hear from you so quickly.

Sadly not Mary; I'm descended from Robert's son John.

I have a private tree on Ancestry which I would be happy to share, but similarly it is far from complete.

I have actually only recently picked up this line again and I'm not confident on some of the names (or at least I can't recall how/why/where I originally got the information). At the beginning of this year, I started again from scratch actually recording everything and verifying everything properly, but haven't got to this bit yet.

It sounds like you may actually have more info than me, so very happy to discuss more?

Just off to work now, so I'll pm you later if that's ok?

Cheerio for now.

Andrea

Doh! Just read your reply again properly and realised that you too are descended through son John! So actually probably even closer cousins...  :)

I then go to John's son (also) John whose daughter Eliza was my Great Grandmother. My mum actually remembers Eliza and I have photos of her.

Hi Andrea!

My line through John Surkis and his wife, Susannah Endersby is 'via' their daughter, Elizabeth b. 1794.   She wed Robert Robinson in 1814 at Elsworth.

It would be good to hear from you when you have the time.  One of my results from  AncestryDNA gave a connection to someone else with Surkis/ss's in their roots, but they have the spelling as 'Circus'.  A spelling I'd not considered, at all.

Hi again Carole (and apologies for missing your 'e'),

The change in spellings is infuriating eh?

My Great Grandmother Eliza definitely spelled it 'Circus' as I have her marriage certificate and baptism records, but it does seem to vary further back.

My mum told me that about 30 years ago, some Americans were asking in the village shop (Needingworth) if there were any Circus/Surkiss descendents still living in the village as they were descended from a branch that had migrated to the US. Sadly, the people in the shop had no idea that this was our family name and she didn't hear until much later and missed them.

Be in touch soon.

Andrea
