Marriage Banns

My great grandparents posted their marriage banns in December of one year. Never married and then reposted their banns in July the following year and did then marry. Is this unusual?
Does anyone have any idea why this might happen?

Someone got cold feet? They had a falling out but got back together later? Someone was ill and they had to postpone the wedding? Would anyone like to add to the list?

Was one or other underage and denied parental consent??

Myriad of possibilities and we would all only be guessing.

There is  particularly strange about it, as has been said, there are many reasons why the marriage may have been postponed.

Banns have to be read within the three months prior to the marriage, so if the marriage had to be postponed for any reason beyond that period, then the Banns would have to be read again.

Did any relatives die or become ill around the time they planned to marry? Could the groom's job have taken him away from the area for a while so that they decided to wait for a bit?

No illness or work related reasons as far as I know.

Groom illegitimate but was in touch with his birth father's family. Both groom and bride of age not under age.

Was it a particularly bad winter, so one or other of the parties couldn't make it to the church.

At one time in Scotland "cautioners" for the couple had to put up money to ensure that the wedding took place, this was to prevent frivolous marriage intentions & the cash was forfeit if there was no show!
