Finding deceased relative
« on: Thursday 20 July 17 13:45 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone knows anything about the Mountstevens of Bristol..  I am trying to find some information about my husband's grandfather.  His name was  Albert Victor Strange born 1891/1901 in Bristol.  In the 1901 census he was living with his father George Victor Strange born 1829 and their housekeeper Blanche Mountstevens born 1864. He was living with them both in the 1911 census but registered has Albert Victor Mountstevens. We have been unable to trace a birth certificate and wondered if anyone would be able to help

There is

STRANGE Albert 1891 Sep. qtr Barton Regis vol 06a p182.

No mother's maiden name, so likely illegitimate, that would account for the variation in names.

On the 1891 Census living at 4 Walcot Buildings Bath, Albert's surname is Strange and he is age 2 years born 1889. Perhaps Albert was George's son ?

On the 1891 census
4 Walcot Buildings

George STRANGE - 60 Beer Seller, born Glos, Bristol
Blanch MOSENTSTERENS (as spelt on Ancestry) - aged 27, born Bridgewater, Somerset
Albert V STRANGE - son - aged 2 years born Somerset, Bristol

On earliest census returns etc  - Blanch was born in 1861

Manipulating the free index for the 1939 Register there is an Albert V Stange born 17 June 1888 living in Bristol (probably slightly mistranscribed and probably Strange?)

That's a great find.  No mmn listed, so perhaps Stevens is a contraction of Mountstevens.
