Keenan family in Ireland
« on: Friday 21 July 17 23:58 BST (UK) »
I am searching for my grandfather, John Keenan, born in Ballybay County Monaghan in 1856 or 7.
The only information I have is his father's name given as James on the marriage certificate for John.
John lived in Barrow in Furness , shown on1901 and 1911 census, and died in Barrow in Furness in 1919
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, as I have tried all the usual searches.

Hello & welcome to Rootschat.  On Johns marriage record does it state if his father James is living or deceased & does it give his occupation? This would help in locating a death record for James as civil records are available from 1864 on www.irishgenealogy.ie.  The roman catholic church records are also available online for Baptisms & marriages on www.registers.nli.ie
www.nationalarchives.ie for Griffiths Valuation (land records) Censuses of 1901 & 1911 even though James may not be still living in 1901.  Do you know names of any of Johns siblings or names of his children? :)

Welcome to RootsChat
If John was RC than it doesn't look good for a baptism.
Ballybay is in the RC parish of Tullycorbet but it's register starts 1862.

And having just looked at the first few pages a major challenge to read.

Thanks for your replies.
I have already contacted the parish at Tullycorbett, so no luck there!
Yes, I believe he was RC as the family continues to be RC.
I can actually narrow down the death date for James Keenan as John has two Marriage certificates, one in 1878 and one in 1884. James is listed as "deceased" on the later one.
I do not know any siblings, but have a lengthy list of John's children, and mostly know their whereabouts, but they are all deceased now.
I will try and locate a death entry for James on www.irishgenealogy

Marriage certificates don't always list a deceased father as dead so it may be that all you can confirm is that James Keenan died before 1884.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Ballybay falls within Castleblaney registration area. Searching Irish statutory deaths 1864 – 1884 there are 3 adult James Keenan deaths registered in Castleblaney 1866, aged 75; 1865 aged 78 & 1881 aged 72.  You might want to look at those to see if any contains information that might link to your family, eg father’s occupation, informants details etc.
