William Hutchinson b1791 Mattersey. Notts

Hello.    Please can anyone help to find the  parents of William Hutchinson b 1791 Mattersey. He married Elizabeth Grey in 1812 in Mattersey.    Many. Thanks.  Tineke

Where did you get the info that William was born in Mattersea?

I can see his marriage to Elizabeth and the baptisms of 10 possible children of theirs over the following years. But there are no other Hutchinson (or similar) baptisms in Mattersey between 1705 and 1811, and no burials in Mattersey for this surname between 1738 - 1829.

Thank you for your reply I got birth at Mattersey from a census ,but have just found in 1851 census his birth place is given a Sutton on Trent so assume it was . Kind regards Tineke

On the 1851 census accessed through Ancestry, it does give William's pob as Mattersea. Where did you say you found the Sutton information?

Remember place of birth often varies between census es and certificates.Death certificates are least reliable.By definition they can only be where the informant believes the deceased was born.

I thought I had saved the census with Sutton On Trent , but cannot find it . Have looked again and you are right it is Mattersey. Thanks Tineke

Mattersey(a) and Sutton on Trent are quite close geographically, the local town being Retford, which would probably where "Mop-Fairs" etc. were held during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Expanding the search a little, there are baptisms for 10 William Hutchinsons between 1789 and 1793 on the disc, but none in Mattersea/Retford/Sutton.

Tineke, have you seen the register of marriages with the entry in? It may say whether William was from another parish, or there may be clues from the witnesses' names.
