Hi,

I'm a newbie on this forum and am hoping someone on here may have access to the records of St. Martin Worcester and could find the name of Mary's parents on their marriage certificate?

According to my Auntie, Thomas Herring born circa 1760 married Mary Sparrow born circa 1765 on 10th July 1785 at St. Martin Worcester. Thomas Herring's father was John Herring born circa 1740 who also married a Mary ?

It will be very much appreciated if someone could find out more?

Church records did not record parents names until the start of civil registration in 1837.

Annette,

Thank you for your reply.

I'm not sure where to go from here?

Any advice, if any, on how to do further research will be appreciated.

Hi
Looking on line it seems all of Thomas and Mary's children were baptised in Old Swinford Worcestershire so that's the place to look for burials to give and age and date of birth.
Last child baptised 1803 so-
There's a Thomas Herring burial 16 July 1808 age 75,so born 1733.
Mary Herring burial 1.8.1825 age 61 so born 1764

It seems Thomas is a lot older and may have been married before but it doesn't say for either Thomas or Mary on the record I can find.

Looking at the records I'd be inclined to think it was Mary that came from Old Swinford which would explain why they moved there and the Sparrows there seem to be baptised as Sparry but appear on the census as Sparrow.
There is a Mary Sparry baptised Old Swinford 22.4.1764 to Joseph and Hannah.

I have a theory about the Herrings but need to do a bit more digging. If I find any thing definite I'll get back to you.

Hi
Unfortunately I had a look at the settlement certificates for Old Swinford and no luck.
There was an apprenticeship for Thomas.
Thomas Herring master Nailor of Stourbridge took a apprentice  John Richards born 1782 in 1792.

John seems to be the son of Joseph and Sarah Richards born 1782 and baptised 25.12.1788 at Old Swinford with his siblings Sarah,William born 1779 and Ann born 9.4.1787.

On the marriage at Worcester for Thomas Herring and Mary Sparrow there are 3 witnesses James Robinson,James Richards and Sarah Richards so this might be a clue.

That's all I have .
Sorry

Thank you for your contribution for: -

This looks good and its great to have witnesses too. :)  Where would I be able to find the settlement certificates at Oldswinford and the apprenticeship ?

The dates for above don't seem to fit in with mine so I'll put down what I have done so far: -

1. John Herrin(g) (1740 - ?) married Mary ? (1740 - ?) had  a son Thomas (1760 - ?). They probably had more children but I don't have records of them.

2. Thomas Herrin(g) (1760, Lye Waste - ?) married Mary Sparrow (1765 - ?) at St. Martin, Worcestershire on 10 July 1785.

Children - all were born in Lye Waste/Oldswinford area: -

Thomas (1786 - ?)
Maria (1793 - 1827)
Sarah (1794 - 1851)
Betty (1796 - ?)
Joseph (1797 - ?)
Harriot (1807 - ?)
Charlotte (1803 - 1826)

3. Thomas Herrin(g) born 1786 in Lye Waste and was baptised on 16 November 1788 in Oldswinford. He married Fanny ? (1786 - ?)

Their children: -

Henzey (1811 - 1846)
James (1814 - 1874)
John (1816 - ?)
Henry (1819 - ?)
Sarah (1821 - ?)

4. James Herrin was born during 1837 in Lye and died on 18 May 1874. He married Jane Newey (1816 - 1874) on 19 June 1836 at Dudley.

Their children: -

Job Herrin (1837 - 4/11/1905)
George (1839 - ?)
Emma (1841 - 1882)
Priscilla (1844 - 1906)

5. Job Herrin was born during 1837 in Lye Waste and died at 2, Hill Street, Quarry Bank on 4 November 1905. Job married Ann Smith (1837 - 13/12/1921) at St. Michael's, Brierley Hill on 2 February 1857.

Their children: -

Alice Lilian Priscilla Jane Herrin (1860 - 1920)
Jane Elizabeth Herrin (1864 - 1932)
Agnes Herrin (1866 - 1939)
Florella Herrin (12 August 1870 - 6 March 1952)
James Harry Herrin (1874 - 1935)
Albert Sabbath Herrin (1877 - 1952)
Lizzy Gertrude Herrin (1881 - 1958)
Arthur Herrin (1888 - ?)

6. Florella Herrin was the last Herrin in our family tree and she married Albert Hill.

Apologies it's not in Family tree format but the best I could do.

Much appreciated, thanks.

Hi
The settlement certificates and apprenticeship are all at The Hive,Worcester which houses the Worcestershire archives.
Birmingham and Midland Genealogy Society do a CD rom with all the parish records for Old Swinford and the settlement certifiactes, apprenticeships and poor law documents on it.
It costs about £16 and can be ordered on line from their site.
If you don't live near the Archives it might be the way to go.
