Drinkwater-Lunn (Ireland-England)
« on: Wednesday 26 July 17 17:46 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone (I'm a beginner at this site) please bare with me.

I'm trying to trace my GG Grandmother. Annie Elly. However I have a feeling that wasn't her real name. She eloped from Southern Ireland (about 1800) and married a Captian of the Guard in England. She married into the Drinkwater-Lunn family who were based in London, Glouster, Guilford and later Coventry & Warwickshire. Up until very recently I've had no luck tracing this lady or her true origin. I know only she came from a very wealthy family in Ireland who cut her off entirely as she'd eloped. However she did marry into an equally wealthy family from what I have learnt. My Great Grandfather Thomas Drinkwater-Lunn and his brother lost thier parents when young, and we're raised by other members of the family, separately but close by as far as I'm aware. All I know is he (My Great Grandfather) was considered to be the black sheep of the family, and didn't have very much to do with his brother in later years, I've no idea why. But if anyone can shed any light it would be appreciated.  I do know that the Drinkwater-Lunns joined in the parish of Aston Cross (family farm) still exsists there (just) and that somehow we are connected to the Lunn Brewiers of London, but again I don't know how.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you so much
C

Hi Lady C,

as agreed in your personal message, I will post here. It is best so that others can chip in with any observations or information.
It would help if you posted the information re the Army Officer you mention as the info I have found has no mention.
You say the family lived in Aston Cross parish. I have assumed this to be Aston, Ashchurch, Gloucestershire -is that what you mean? Otherwise none of this applies. :-\ There are several Thomas Drinkwaters around.
Drinkwater Lunn
In 1871 census indexes on one site, Thomas and family are listed as Drinkwater but someone has amended this to Drinkwater Lunn. The actual form shows Drinkwater.
The surname Drinkwater- Lunn seems to be used later.

So here we are:
Thomas Lunn baptised Ashchurch, Gloucestershire 5th November 1820 aged 2 yrs
Mother: Hannah Lunn spinster. address Newtown

John Lunn - Ashchurch 20 April 1814 mother Hannah address Newtown.

There are other baptisms for  Anne, Elizabeth and Mary to Hannah, spinster address Pamington (I think that is what it says) but these were all baptised together in 1834 and no dates of birth given so not sure if this is the same family.

Marriage 20th April 1843
Thomas Lunn, Tailor, married Martha Cresswell, Ashchurch

children to this couple were baptised with Drinkwater as part of their first name and Lunn as their surname.

1851  1974/ 299/15

Aston, Ashchurch
Thomas Drinkwater  33 yrs master Tailor
Martha Drinkwater  38 yrs
Elizabeth Drinkwater  7 yrs
Alfred Drinkwater  5 yrs
Daniel Drinkwater  4 yrs
Anna Drinkwater  3 yrs
Thomas Drinkwater  1 yr

Lastly, here is 1841 Piece 347; Folio 2; page 2
Transcribed as Drenkwate but reads Drinkwater

Pamington, Ashchurch

John Drenkwate  60 yrs  Yeoman
Mary Drenkwate  76 yrs
Ann Drenkwate  25 yrs Dressmaker
Thomas Drenkwate  20 yrs Tailor
Mary Drenkwate  15 yrs
Thos Drenkwate  2 yrs
John Drenkwate  7 months

No relationships are shown in 1841

I will leave it there - lots to look at. :)

Hello again,

after your information in pm which you agree to posting here -
Thomas Drinkwater Lunn with wife Nellie (pre WW1)

1906 Thomas Drinkwater Lunn married Nellie Cooper in Coventry.

1901 2912/179/14
Coventry
William Lunn  44 yrs b Ashchurch, Gloucestershire
Annie Lunn  44 yrs
Martha Annie Lunn  21 yrs
Thomas Lunn  16 yrs b Ashton under Lyne, Lancs
Alma Lunn  15 yrs
Agnes Andria Lunn  9 yrs
Margaret Lilian Lunn  4 yrs

1881 2912/179/14

transcribed as Luner?
William is transcribed as Walter b Aston Gloucestershire

June 1877 Blackpool - Fylde district

William Drinkwater Lunn married Annie Healey

I would think that this might be the Annie Elly/Ely reference you have.

William is part of the Drinkwater - Lunn family I posted earlier where it seems that originally it was Lunn through the illegitimate birth and then the name Drinkwater was also brought into the various namings.

Annie Healey is born in Ashton under Lyne and a marriage shows her father as John.

Perhaps they did elope - to Blackpool? The certificate should supply more information.

Here are details of the 1877 marriage which you can see transcribed on Lancashire Online Parish Clerk site.

28th May 1877 St John, Blackpool.
William Drinkwater Lunn  22 yrs Joiner, Bachelor, Blackpool Father Thomas Lunn, Innkeeper
Annie Healey - 22 yrs  Spinster, Blackpool father John Healey, Bootmaker
Witnesses: John Porter; Robert Butcher
They were married by Banns.

This would then make sense for Annie but age slightly out

1871 4072/134/7

Ann Healey 18 yrs b Ashton u Lyne with parents John, b Ireland a shoemaker and Sarah b Nottingham plus several siblings.
