Govan could be an error, Carole  :-\

Where is Mercy Campbell's place of birth on 1911?

Thanks to both of you for chipping in. I had some of the information you mention already.

It looks to me as if this may have happened - I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong:

Robert Shaw Campbell marries Martha Rebecca Slade 1879
They have 6 children between 1880 and 1889
Martha dies 1893
1901 Robert living with Nelly and his children in Marylebone, Age 41

Carole says there is a marriage in 1898 of Robert Campbell to possibly Ellen Annie Jack.

Could Ellen also be Nelly?????

1902 Marriage record of Robert Shaw Campbell to Mercy Charlotte Brown
1911 Robert Campbell living with Mercy Campbell in Eastbourne. Married for 9 years so 1902. Age 50.
Eldest daughter May is 13 so could be Mercy's from an earlier marriage? There are two others born 1903 and 1904.

The ages of Robert in 1901 and 1911 census tally ok.

My big concern is over his birth place of Govan on 1911 census. Could they really have got it that wrong???

Would it be useful to acquire the marriage certs to Nelly and Mercy to maybe obtain more information??

Thanks.

Yes just as Nancy is Agnes

Would it be useful to acquire the marriage certs to Nelly and Mercy to maybe obtain more information?? Yes, this will at least give father's name & occ. & needed to go backwards

See http://www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=nelly

Quite often illegitimate children are given the father's surname as a middle name.

There's no Robert Shaw Campbell born Govan 1858 - 1862

On SP (the only Robert Campbell in same period)...

CAMPBELL ROBERT 1861
646/1 421 Govan

However, once you have the MC with father's details it may help to confirm whether illegitimate.

Can you name his children in order from eldest to youngest please as they may have used the naming pattern which may help to work out his mother's name?

Harriet (Martha) b.1880. Christened Harriet. Father: Robert Shaw Campbell
Robert Shaw b.1881. Baptism shows father Robert Shaw Campbell
Ellen (Eleanor in 1901 census) b.1884. Marriage Banns of 1902 shows father is Robert Shaw Campbell
Henry J. b. 1888
William Alexander b.1889. Baptism  shows father is Robert Shaw Campbell

Possibly Alice (1903) then Fanny (1904) with Mercy Campbell after they married in 1902.

I have been assuming all along that the middle name of SHAW is taken from his mother!!!??

That would of course be a good assumption but until you have a name for his father, looking for a marriage would be a 'needle in a haystack'.

As I said "Quite often illegitimate children are given the father's surname as a middle name" that didn't mean always but can be a good pointer sometimes & worth knowing  ;)

The marriage in 1900 (on 25 Dec 1900 in Camden) was between Robert Shaw Campbell, 19, son of Robert Shaw Campbell, painter, and Sophia Beatrice Charles, 21.

If that helps at all.

Always looking for GOODWINS in Berkshire :)
