How can I find out more on a British soldier that came to Canada?
« on: Wednesday 02 August 17 02:33 BST (UK) »
John Tabberrah (maybe other spelling) was a soldier enlisted in Nottingham England and came to Canada in 1827

By 1855, he moved to NY with his wife Ann and 3 children.

Having trouble finding information when he was in Canada. A newspaper article did say one of his kids were born in Sorel Quebec.

A son William Henry was baptised at Sorel 15 October 1840. Born 10 October.

A son John died and was buried at Chambly in April 1842.

Another son John died 27 May 1845 aged 1 year 11 months and was buried at Quebec.

And another son  John died 25 August 1851 and was buried at Montreal.

Thank you!
Any idea how I can trace John Tabberrah to England?

Per the army file he attested in 1825 aged 18, so born circa 1807. Born St Mary''s Nottingham.

This 1804 baptism is a possibility https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NY2Y-4H7

If he was on the small side he may have lied about his age on joining the army.

The Nottingham Review of 16 October 1840 records the death of a Mrs. Mary Tabberrah at Hyson Green, aged 61.

See the mentions of William and Mary Tabberrah on this other thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=684026.0

William was a Framework knitter - which was also your John's occupation in 1825.

Looks like that John died 10 days later after baptismal date in 1804.

Unless there was a new baby named John again?

Also, in NY census, it says in 1870, he was 73. Wife is Mary Malone, daughter is Ann, 25 at the time.

Burial records said Ann Malone Tabberrah died in 1856 born 1808, daughter of Mrs Malone it said. Totally confused myself now.

I think the Mary Malone in the 1870 census is his mother-in-law. In the 1860 census (with John 50 and his (?) daughters Mary and Jane) she is Mary Maloon, 70.

More baptisms:

Robert (Tabrah) was baptised at Quebec garrison on 24 December 1837, born 21 November.

John (Tabbrah)  was baptised at Montreal ( St Thomas) on 27 January 1851, born 7 December 1850.

The mother is named as Ann in all the baptisms I have listed so far.  The January 1851 baptism gives her maiden name as Taylor.

The 1880 census for Beekmantown lists John Taberah aged 75 father-in-law of William Loughran.

According to the Nottinghamshire baptisms index there was another child John Tabbarah baptised at St Mary's on 12 September 1805, parents William and Mary.
