Sidney Broomhead / Sidney B Taylor (1894)

Sidney B Taylor / Orig: Sidney Broom(s)head
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/902606/person/180087823232/facts

I was wondering if anyone has any possible leads for my great grandfather's natural parents, who was born Sidney Broomshead (11th March 1894), to James and Elizabeth, and was subsequently adopted by a Thomas Glover and Betsy (Elizabeth) Taylor.

I am pretty sure that Broomshead is either a nom de plume, or a corruption of the Surname Broomhead. On the birth certificate (attached) there appears to be a possible surname listed under the mother's maiden name entry. The surname listed as formally is 'Bromily'

There appears to be a lack of consistency when it also comes to the occupation of the father. On the birth certificate, he is listed as a General Labourer, but on parish records, he is listed as 'Traveller', probably relating to some sort of salesman position?

It's a long shot, but if anyone can have any possible links, or places to search. Adoptions were, as I read, unrecorded until 1927. There is an earlier census record which lists him as a boarder, presumably as adoption wasn't a legalised documented term at the time?

Thanks all. :)

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

Legal, formal, adoption came into being in 1927.
Before that there was usually no legal paperwork; although you may be very lucky and find something?

Hi Rosie,

I did search for that address. I think it came back as a shop at the time?

In 1901 it looks like he's a farmed out child. These were children farmed out to families who received payment.
I notice he goes by the name Taylor rather than Glover which indicates to me that he was only loosely regarded as adopted.

Would it be possible that Taylor was his adoptive mother's maiden name? There is another child living in the same household called 'Fred Taylor' who is listed as son.

Betsy (Elizabeth) Taylor.

I think you will find her name was Betsy, not Elizabeth.  Sidney was born at the same address shown for her in 1891.
