« on: Friday 04 August 17 00:03 BST (UK) »
Hi

This photo may be my paternal grandfather born 1877 who was a marine fireman and died 1919

OR

It may be his son (my uncle) born 1903 died 1966 who served in India in the 1940's but I have no details of his regiment etc

It's not a photo taken prior to 1919 so must be the son.

Good morning,

Not a military uniform and with the coat on not in India. Did the son also serve with the fire service at any time?

Any chance of a decent close-up of his cap badge.

With that style of overcoat, the whistle, and the armband, I'd say it's a police uniform.

Hi  :) if you Google "20th century British police uniforms" several of the pictures have that arm band.

Frank. :)

Added, here's a good shot of the type of armband on the cuff.

Hi

Thank you all for your thoughts.  Interesting about the police aspect as my cousin was a chief superintendent with the Merseyside police and he was born 1928 died 2011.    The photo does bear a strong resemblance to him but all my grandfathers children and their children had that strong family resemblance.

The photo was in an envelope found by my sister whilst sorting some old documents.  A second photo is an original of my paternal grandmother with the son born 1903 on her lap aged 10 months and is identified on the back.  This photo is clearly a copy of an original without anything on the back but the envelope has James G Carlin written on it - my grandfather.

The son born 1903 was never connected to the fire service at any time but Shaun's comment has set me thinking.  My cousin's widow and 2 sons ( both detectives) are still alive so I am going to send a copy of this photo to them to see if it my cousin in the early days of his police career

I tried homing in on the cap badge but it distorted.  Will have another go later

EDIT

Thank you Frank - saw your reply whilst posting

Hi

I have now had confirmation that the photo is indeed my late cousin who joined the police force in the 1940's and became a Chief Superintendant.

Thanks to all for your input - much appreciated
