3 in hand Brake or Coaches from Bridgnorth
« on: Friday 04 August 17 21:35 BST (UK) »
does anyone have any knowledge of Brakes (horse drawn coaches) used in the Bridgnorth area possibly 1900 ish, my grandfather George Edward Jones was born in 1882 and in 1901 after the death of his father he was living with his uncle John Yorke in Tunnel st Coseley, his uncle was a brake proprietor who had routes including one from Bridgnorth up the hermitage and onto Sedgley and Dudley, he often told us that passengers had to get out and walk up the hermitage hill and that they needed 3 horses to get the coach to the top, I would love to find a picture if one is still out there, mother did have a couple but they have disappeared with the passage of time, any help appreciated..

Not specifically for Shropshire but there are some good pictures of brakes with passengers here, specially the first 3.

A brake was normally simply a wagon with seats facing forward for the coachmen and often longitudinal benches in the body for passengers

Hi,

Could this be the same family?
G Jones sat in the cab and the name on the door.
Said to be a day trip from The Woodman Inn, Bridgnorth in the 1920's.

Thank you, more likely to have been the horse drawn variety, he lived in Coseley / Sedgley all of his life, worked at the Bean Industries in later life, Grandpa was unversed in the ways of the motor vehicle, never drove one and showed no intent to learn, my father and I used to drive him and his wife Annie Jones (Osborne) off on holidays all over the place, come to think of it he was probably right in not learning to drive..
