But why the alterations on the original?

Here is his birth, from GRO, also odd as no mother is given. If they were unmarried but they registered him as Nixon, why isn't her maiden name on there?

And it's an odd name: Bertie Nixon Nixon ?? It would be worth seeing the birth certificate.

My friend is so grateful, thank you all so much! I have passed the torch on to him for him to continue, so maybe he will obtain the birth certificate somehow to review it if needs be.
His nan never knew G W A Nixon (her father) as he left when she was 4, so she never knew her family on her fathers side. This will be great to tell her. I can't thank you all enough!

Yes it could be a mistake in the transcription on to the register and he may have been registered as Bertie Nixon Beeton. I wonder why they waited so long to marry, perhaps parents wouldn't give permission.

My grandmother put my grandfathers surname on my mother birth certificate and on censuses apparently. They didn't marry until 5 years after my mother was born. It might be a similar situation?

Yes, it could be as simple as that, just a bit odd that there is no maiden name.

Bertie Lynn Nixon is quite easy to find in the censuses.
