Can a death be registered in two names?
« on: Saturday 05 August 17 13:59 BST (UK) »
From the 1911 census I've been looking for an extra child for Richard Hine and Henrietta Coe, who died prior to 1911.
This mystery child clearly was born and died between censuses

There are 4 children listed on the 1911 census, 2 living 2 who have died In 16 years of marriage (which would make 1895)

The living children are easy
Henrietta and Richard - both on the 1911 census

Ethel Hine (mmn Coe) was born and died in 1899

But there I came to a dead end

But tried illegitamate births just prior to the marriage and came up with Gladys Mary Coe, (no mothers maiden name) born in Wandsworth in the last quarter on 1896

Richard was in the army and sent to India on 14 Feb 1896, he was discharged on 8th Jun 1897 due to being medically unfit - Richard and Henrietta married on 24th October 1897 (two years after the date they give in the census) - it's plausible within the time scale that Henrietta discovers she's pregnant with Richard's baby just after he went to India, and therefore unable to marry her but they marry soon after he returns home)

There is a death for Gladys Mary Coe on both freebmd and gro in Jun 1898 in Wandsworth (freebmd gives an age of 1, gro of 17 - however I have seen gro giving ages in months instead of years - 17 months would fit with the birth shown

On freebmd (but not gro) there is also a death for Gladys Mary Hine - aged 1 - both on the same volume and page

I can't see a birth which would fit for a different Gladys Mary Hine (there is one in Newport in 1886 - but she dies there when she is 3)

So the question is if she was officially Gladys Mary Coe but known as Hine would there be two entries in the death register?

Presumably this is the death you mean
Deaths Jun 1898
Coe    Gladys Mary    1    Wandsworth    1d   351
Hine    Gladys Mary    1    Wandsworth    1d   351

I agree with Jebber - the certificate probably has both names.  There are 11 names on that reference, at that time there were 10 entries to a sheet

Thank you all

I'm happy that this seems like the missing child
