Ellis Island Query
« on: Monday 07 August 17 15:32 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am currently trying to establish whether some relatives of mine would have passed through Ellis Island on a trip from Scotland to New York in 1922 (enroute to California for a 6 month stay).
The reason being is that they were 1st class passengers and information from the internet says that
First and second-class passengers would disembark, pass through Customs at the piers and were free to enter the United States, while steerage and third class passengers went across to Ellis Island.
However these relatives appear on the Ellis Island Passenger Search website for this trip in 1922, so without sounding too daft must mean that they did have to go through Ellis Island even though they were 1st class passengers. ???
Thanks

As far as I know, the passenger lists would have everyone on the boat, so that's what you're looking at.

There is discussion of this on the Ellis Island website - https://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/ellis-island-history
