Donohue in Dowlais
« on: Wednesday 09 August 17 09:26 BST (UK) »
Would some kind person be able to help.  I do not have a lot of information but here it is -
My greatgrandmother Ellen Donohue married Jeremiah Mahoney Catholic Chapel Dowlais no. 41,
6 Sept 1874.  He lived at 14 Lower St. Dowlais and Ellen at 5 Lewis St. Dowlais.  Her father is John deceased.  Wedding ceremony in presence of Daniel Daley & Ellen Donovan.
Ellen's father is Edward John Donohue, known as John and he is said to have died when Ellen was young.  She was born May 1858.
Both were born Drimoleague in County Cork Ireland.  When Ellen's father died her mother remarried.    Her mother may have been Margaret Buckley.  I don't know if she remarried in Co. Cork or Dowlais and I don't know the name of her second husband.
Ellen & Jeremiah had a child Daniel born in Dowlais on 11 Sept 1875, born at 14 Castle St. Dowlais.  This is where they were living.  Jeremiah worked in the Blast Furnaces.
Is it possible with so little information to find out who Ellen's mother remarried possibly late 1860s or early 1870s?  Any help is appreciated very much.  Denise Quinn, Queensland, Australia
The following year the family arrived in Australia.

Following my previous post 9 August 2017 I stated that the family arrived in Australia in 1876.  What I should have stated was that only Jeremiah, Ellen and baby son Daniel arrived in Australia.  Ellen's mother and probably other family members stayed in Wales.  Denise in Queensland, Australia

From Free BMD :- Jan-Mar 1859. Margaret Donohue married either  Dennis Regan or  George Bryant.

1861 census. Denis Regan, age 40, born Ireland. Margaret Regan, age 30 born Ireland, Margaret Regan age 9, daughter, born Dowlais. Living Newfoundland, Merthyr Tydfil. ( Daughter could be from husband's first marriage?)

In 1871 family living in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil. Margaret born Cork.( Age shown as 50!) Also in household Robert Donohue, brother -in-law, born Cork, 1847.

Many thanks to you for that information.  It is certainly a real possibility.  The Regan name is very common in the Drimoleague area where they came from in County Cork, Ireland.
Much appreciated from quinny_aus
