Personally, I use FreeBMD for BMDs - it's free!
And FamilySearch for other stuff - also free.

This is for the UK. The people I am looking at were travelling actors so could be anywhere in UK.

I've got to the stage where I need 1911 census.

If you need any Scottish records including the 1911 census then you need to go to ww.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  to see the original entries not transcriptions. It is a pay site but very reasonable.

If you need 1911 census for England, the only place to see the actual image is FindMy Past, which I'm afraid is a subscription site, but also includes the 1939 register.

BIB - Not quite. You can see the originals of the 1911 census on Ancestry too. However you cannot see the 1939 Registration on ancestry.

You can buy credits for findmypast if you only want to look at the 1911 census, however looking at the 1939 Registration just using credits is very expensive so a subscription is better.

Does your local library have free access to Ancestry and/or FindMyPast?
Mine has Ancestry Library Edition.

You could use free sessions to see if either of them offer what you need?
