Tomsons [or Tompsons] in Sellinge
« on: Sunday 13 August 17 23:53 BST (UK) »
Hi

Is anyone able to check the parish registers for Sellinge (not Selling) for me?

I am trying to find the christening of Mary Tomson between about 1612 and 1616. I have the will of her father (Thomas) and in this he mentions his wife Lucy. I think the following marriage must be that of John and Lucy

Thomas Tompson and Lucia Hethelhes
2 February 1612 Sellinge, Kent.

This is from Familysearch.

This marriage may have been by Licence as there is a Licenced issued on 1 February 1611 which is for the marriage of Thomas Tompeson of Sellinge and Lucy Haslewood, widow. Altough Lucy's surname is different I think they may be the same person and the name might have been might have been mistranscribed in the first example which came from Familysearch.

Mary married John Dod in Sellinge on 12 August 1634.

Thomas died in 1632 and appears to mention John Dod (or John Dad) in his Will so the families must have known each other.

As well as his daughter Mary, Thomas also mentions two other daughters, Bennett and Anne, and a son named James who was named as the executor of his Will. Thomas apparently also had a brother named James, who in turn had a son named James (again both of these are named in the will).

If anyone can help with these or any other possible Tomsons in the area it would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Matt

Hi Betty

Thanks for those. I'm not sure how (or if) these relate to the Tomsons I'm looking into but I'll add them to my notes as they may link in. One of the fathers named might be a brother or other relative of my Thomas of course.

It's interesting to see the way Lucy's surname is spelt differently in different sources.

Thanks again

Matt
