This describes how the index came about.  He is on it because he lived in SA during it's first fifty years.

It was created by what seems a pretty reputable body so it must be sourced from somewhere.  They still exist as per this link, so it may be worth asking them directly.

Thank you for your help. I have contacted the SA Genealogy and Heraldry Society by email to ask about sources and also about shipping records. All I could find was Wm Sawyer's name on a list of passengers for the Anna Maria. Here in NSW we can go to the State Archives and see a microfilm reel which gives native place, parents' names etc so I have asked if that is available in SA as it would be interesting to see who his parents were when he immigrated.
