What was in Evesham?
« on: Monday 14 August 17 20:52 BST (UK) »
Evening

I have noticed that my grandad appears as a witness on the marriage cert of what would have been his cousin. The puzzling thing is that his address is listed on the marriage certificate as 91 High Street Evesham. This was in 1938. My Dad has no knowledge of his dad ever living down there. He spent his whole life in Scotland then New Zealand. Could anybody suggest what might have been at this address in Evesham?

Jim

Perhaps that's where he was staying while he was visiting for the wedding Jim?

I don't remember seeing any addresses for witnesses on any of the Marriage Certificates I hold?
Witnesses just signed their name :-\

Have you looked at where he was living on the 1939 register on Find My Past....you can do a free search....as KG said the witness's addresses don't usual appear on marriage certificates...or are you assuming that he was living at his cousin's address.

I think Jim missed some important information?
The wedding was in Scotland! ::)

Information on Scottish Marriage Certificates:
Signature of witnesses (from 1922 onwards the addresses of the witnesses is also included)

31 High Street, Evesham doesn't exist on the 1939 National Register.
But there is the Railway Hotel (Henry & Edith Tigwell).
Or private addresses Railway Hotel Cottage (James & Clare Rowell), Essendene (George & Annie Anderson), St Equr (John Edwards) and St Mary (Arthur Proudman).

Yes, sorry folks, the wedding was in Scotland. In Dundee which is pretty much where he is from. Absolutely nothing in the family history to have him in Evesham. He obviously made the journey back north to his cousin wedding. He became a motor mechanic. I wondered if work had him down there??

Looking on google maps, 91 High St Evesham is a Red Homes estate agents. The Building looks to be quite old (by my humble Australian standards), is of three levels and also looks to me that it was perhaps an hotel or boarding house.

That's true - IF you assume that house numbers haven't changed over the years! ;D

Mea culpa! Don't know why I fixated on #31 :-[

1939 Register has James Robertson and Arthur Williams at #91.
