Old DNA Test
« on: Sunday 20 August 17 11:27 BST (UK) »
Hi, some years back I had my DNA tested. Then Ancestry started DNA testing again but the old info was gone. I don't want to pay again to have my DNA tested. Any ideas what I should do? I do have the old report. Any info gratefully received,

Was your previous test for y-DNA through the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation that was taken over by Ancestry?

Hi, all I know is its a "paternal lineage test result" and that my dna shows that I belong to haplogroup j2. It has Ancestry.com on the results I downloaded.

As I suspected.

Ancestry no longer does y-DNA testing.  The testing Ancestry do do now is autosomal DNA, which is the first 22 chromosomes.  Your y chromosome sits on the 23rd chromosome.  In DNA terms it's like comparing apples and oranges.

Ancestry made the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation results a public database, but then closed that down when it was misused in a criminal investigation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorenson_Molecular_Genealogy_Foundation

Unfortunately, I don't think there is much you can do with the results you have.  There is a site called ysearch.org that can be used to compare y-DNA results from different providers but it isn't used much now that FamilyTreeDNA are the only real provider of y-DNA tests.

I think your only option is to test again.  Here is some information about the different types of tests and the different providers:

suggest autosomal with ancestry then download raw data, to ftdna,my heritage and particularly ged match.com Ancestry don't allow uploads that's why I would test with them first. There are other sites as well.

Hi Hussar, I also had yDNA (my brother's) done through the old Ancestry however I transferred my results to FamilyTreeDNA before Ancestry shut that service down.  I think you may still be able to transfer your Ancestry results at a reduced price.  These two pages should help you:

Off the top of my head I think that FTDNA still accept transfered results from the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation. I'd get in touch with FTDNA and see what they say.

Thanks, ChristineM and Deer243.

If anyone can confirm these transfers are still available it would be appreciated as I can pass the information on to someone else.
