William Smith baptised 1843 Penhow/e.
Maria Smith baptised 1846 Penhow/e.

This is what I have so far trish1120 and im looking for a burial at the moment possibility of one I saw once in St John in Llandenny

Just found Wales Census 1841 Vere Smith age 35 Penhow birth between 1802 to 1806. in Monmouthshire. as shown on Familysearch site. In Wales 1851 census shows he is age 45 born in Llandavenny. Monmouthshire,  which would mean he would be born 1806 in Llandavenny. Hope this helps.. appreciate your help.

Ok from Census we have Vere born;

1841 c Monmouthshire, living in Penhow
1851 c 1806 Llandevenny, living in Risca
1861  cant find them!
1871 c 1807 Llandaoverwy, living in Risca
1881 as below;

George Ellms, 59, Head, Mar, Coal Miner, born Somerset
George Vear Ellms, 13, Son
Arthur Ellms, 6, Son
Vear Smith, 79, Lodger, Mar, Labourer, born St Brides******
Eliza Smith, 76, Lodger, Mar, born Newtown

So living with their Daug Marys Husband (you probably know George/Mary married 1855)

Possible?

VERE Smith Baptised 19 May 1806, St Bridget, St Bride's Netherwent
Father JOHN
(FreeREG)

Only 1 other Sibling Baptised there EDWARD, 26 Jul 1804, Father John

Looking up St Brides on Genuki we have;
"ST. BRIDE NETHERWENT, a parish in the lower division of the hundred of Caldicott, in the county of Monmouth, 7 miles to the E. of Newport. Caerleon is its post town. It is situated near the South Wales railway, and contains the hamlet of Llandevenny********. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Llandaff, of the value of £178, in the patronage of T. Perry, Esq.

Now some Trees have Vere Herbert Smith mixed up with yours. But he was very well off and died 1860 and left a Will.

So I think this is your Vere, Father John, esp seeing what Genuki says.

Will see what else I can find.

Trish  :)

1841 Census Edward Smith is living in Penhow with his Family born c 1806
1861 he is born c 1805 - Laydevenny, still in Penhow

Interestingly a Vere Smith was Bapt St Brides 24 June 1793 to Vere/Mary so more of a common name than one would think.

There are very few people in Llanddevenny 1851 Census.

These caught my eye;
Elizabeth Smith, 70, Head, Widow, Ag Lab, born Magor
Thomas Smith, 40, Son, Unm, Ag Lab, born Llandevenny
Hannah Smith, 15, Granddaughter, born Penhow
John Smith, 7, Grandson, born Magor

1841 they appear to be in Landevenny, St Brides Netherwent;
Elizabeth Smith,60
Thomas Smith, 30, Ag Lab

Just posting this in case its helpful later.

Another Smith Baptised St Brdget. St Brides Netherwent;
ELIZABETH 30 March 1817, Parents JOHN/ELIZABETH

So if I am on the right track the Elizabeth in Census I posted may be Veres Mother and Thomas a Sibling.
But I cant find a Baptism for Thomas!

Hi trish1120

I have found a marriage for John Smith and Elizabeth nee Jones born 1781.  Married on 8th Feb 1796 St Mary the Virgin Church, Monmouth.

What I would like to know is that I am now looking for a birth date or Baptism for this John Smith and place of birth and possibly his parents as the marriage record it shows him as an inhabitant of this parish.

I hope you can help me with this query

Thanks

Elizlloyd
