Marriage witness-Auckland New Zealand
« on: Saturday 26 August 17 00:03 BST (UK) »
I am trying to figure out the name the female witness on this marriage certificate. I can make out Sarah L* Edwards Street. I thought it was Laugin but when you look at the other lower case letter "a"s this person has a small  gap at the top. I have added a second sample so you get the idea of this person's handwriting. I am really struggling with this one!

I've been looking on NZBDM and Papers Past and can't see any Langin, Laugin or Largin.  ???

Thanks Jamjar! I am at least glad to get the confirmation with some other variation! This is the Mary Elizabeth Keane that you helped me with about a month ago. I am now trying to hunt down her family in NZ and was hoping Sarah might point me in the right direction.

I can't really see the second letter as anything but "a" - and the writer doesn't invariably leave a gap in the top of the "a".

Since this is a phonetic interpretation of the name (Sarah couldn't write) what about Langen, or even Langham?

Thanks again everyone. I am wondering if Lorrigan is the last name (of course the NZ BMD is down now so I can't check  >:( ) ArthurK your comment made me think a little harder and I did find a family with this name (although no Sarah). It may be pure coincidence but the family came to NZ with the groom's family on in 1843 on the Westminster. Again, thanks for the suggestions.

Lorrigan might be a possibility, though the writer seems fairly consistent about dotting his i's. So much depends on things like how clearly Sarah spoke and how good the writer's hearing was - or if someone had written the name down in rough beforehand, how good the writing was and how good his eyes were.
