details of Hartley shops in Stalybridge 1920's-30's
« on: Thursday 29 July 04 11:43 BST (UK) »
Several of my Hartley relatives had shops in Stalybridge and if you know of them you may be able to break my brickwall.

Elizabeth Ann Bardsley (Nee Hartley), the daughter of Harry and Eliza Jane Hartley (nee Wright), ran a Drapers Shop at 33 High Street, Stalybridge.

Emily Fielding (nee Hartley), aunt of above daughter of William and Sarah Ann Hartley (Nee seagar), ran a Sweetshop/tobacconist next door to Elizabeth Ann's drapers.

Florence Saxon (Nee Hartley), sister of above, ran a grocers shop on High Street, Stalybridge.

Ernest Hartley had an Antiques shop.

These Hartley's are all descendant of John and Sarah Hartley (nee Wilkinson). John was a cordwainer and presumably had a shop in Stalybridge at some point. Although I can find a marriage for John and Sarah and then Sarah on the 1871 census I have no other details for them hence my brickwall.

Hi Peter

As the marriage of John Hartley to Sarah Wilkinson occurred on 1 Jan 1835 there is only the parish record, for Manchester Cathedral.

John is given as a batchelor of this parish, Cordwainer.
Sarah is given as a spinster of this parish.

Married by bans and both made their mark.

Witnessed by Thomas Parry and Thomas Chadwick. Thomas Parry also witnessed the preceeding and following marriages and two on the following page ie 4 of the 6 marriages that fit on the A4 page.

From the marriage certificate of their son William (10 Aug 1863), John still appeared to be alive and working as a cordwainer.

However, he is not with Sarah and family on the 1871 census.
Sarah appears to have been b. Heckmondwike, Yorks her eldest son Thomas is living around the corner, in the two adjacent houses are two families of Wilkinsons also from Heckmondwike.
The head of the senior of these families was a stone mason.

I'd have to dig out the details of the 1871 census for Sarah but Thomas was at 59 Canal St, Stalybridge.

Hi Steve
I have found your family in Dukinfield in 1851. The 1861 census as not been made available except at record centres and some libraries. Going by the birthdates of thier children they may be in Ashton - Lynne in 1841 you would be better asking for a Lancashire lookup for this census.
I will detail the birth districts below as the census is not to clear

1851 Dukinfield HO 107 2237 F 713

John Hartley          Pendleton
Sarah                    Bradford
Jane                      Staleybridge
Thomas                 Ashton-u-Lyne
William                    ~             ~
George                 Hyde
Eliza                       ~

With your permission I will delete your other Cheshire post for the same info, keeps the place tidy.
