Paupers
« on: Sunday 27 August 17 11:14 BST (UK) »
Would anyone be able to tell me what the F W stands for on here, please?  I think the following word is short for Kirkby the place my ancestor lived because there are other people on the sheet listed as F W Kirkby.  He wasn't in a workhouse as he has an address and is listed as Head of the household.  On the following census his wife is there too also marked F W K.  Thank you for any help.  I'm very new to this so have a lot of learning to do!  :)

Welcome to Rootschat.

F W K or F W Kni is the abbreviation for Framework Knitter - an occupation widely found in the Nottinghamshire area.

FWK = Knitter of fabrics using a machine - a Dictionary of Old Trade, Titles and Occupations.

Added:  Oops, I forgot about the Leicestershire connection as well to FWK  :-[

FWK would mean that they were frame work knitters.

Hi Sue, welcome to rootschat

These events in the link, related to the Luddites, FWK's and pauperism, are before your census but you might find them interesting.

Thank you so much everyone!   :D  That is very useful to know.  As it happens I was looking into a different ancestor in the Notts area who was a miller at Forge Mill, Papplewick / Bulwell and I found a history that included framework knitters and what a hard life it was but didn't make the connection.  I was focused on the Pauper aspect and trying to tie the initials in with that.  I'm so glad I found this website.  Thank you once again!
