William Holt of Longwick in the Parish of Princes Risborough c.1685

Hi All,

Looking for a baptism for William Holt c.1685 who married in Radnage in 1705. The marriage entry states he was of Longwick in the Parish of Princes Risborough. After his marriage he lived in Crowell, Oxfordshire.

The name of a parish on the marriage entry is simply where he was living during the 3 weeks that the banns were called.

It does not mean that he was born/baptised there

Yes - there are Holt's all over the area although this was a marriage by liscence.

There is these baptisms/burials in BucksFHS St Mary's PR's. Princes Risborough.


A bit earlier then you asked for, but maybe worth considering.

Baptism - 13 Feb 1677.  Jane daughter of William & Jane HOLT.
Baptism  - 9 Mar 1678.  William son of William & Jane HOLT.

Burial - 17 Jun 1708.  Jane HOLT wife of William, affidavit made.
Burial  - 24 May 1735. William HOLT aged 88, an aged poor man, affidavit made.

No Marriage in Princes Risborough, for William Holt to Jane.

There are 16 Jane baptisms, of various surnames, in Princes Risborough, from 1630 to 1660.

I have a William Darville marrying a Mary Holt in 1773, @ Bledlow in my tree. (Maybe linked to your Holts).

This looks likely. There were two burials for a William in Crowell in the late 1750's but no ages listed - in fact one is crossed out (just the first name) with no explanation. He was a Blacksmith at the time of his marriage - but often occupations are not listed so that may not help.

I haven't located Deborah Dutton, his wife of Crowell at the time of marriage - so I have no comparable date.

There is one marriage in the OxFHS marriage index that stands out.

John Dutton to Mary North, 10 May 1684 @ Sydenham, Oxon.

Also.....

Leonard Dutton,(of Crowell) to Ruth King,(of Henton), 20 Nov 1664 @ Crowell, Oxon.

There are others Dutton marriages that may fit, but further away from Crowell/Chinnor.

There is a Judeth Dutton, baptised 23 April 1699 @ Crowell, to Richard & Debora Dutton.  It was the mothers name that stood out.

I can find no marriage in Oxforshire, of Richard Dutton to a Debora.

Some of the Parish registers, have some Christian names in Latin in 17th century, especialy Chinnor, so that may cause a problem.

I did see the name Dutton crop up in Crowell registers yesterday so they were clearly in the area.

Ok found Richard Dutton and Deborah Morris! This are the right couple.

Now to look to see if they have a daughter called Deborah.

Ok ok seeing lots of Dutton in Crowell now - the records are now in Latin so it's a good job I recently had to do some translations and can make quicker work of this!
