Jane DEAN born c1809 - Shenley, Herts?
« on: Monday 28 August 17 13:56 BST (UK) »
Hello,

JANE  DEAN was the second wife of Thomas Scott COLE, they married on 22 Jan 1826 in St Marylebone Middx.

The 1841 census in Southwark shows approx age 30 and the 1851 census in Chelsea shows age 42 (b 1809), birthplace Shenley Herts. I cannot trace the 1861 census - she would have been a widow as Thos Scott Cole died in 1859.

She died 4 Aug 1869 Chelsea, aged 60 (I have death cert).

Without the 1861 census I cannot confirm birth details, and I have been unable to trace her birth record. I have searced for the birth/baptism using Ancestry, Find my past etc without luck, so cannot go back any further generations.

Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks

Was the informant on the death a relative?

If so could check to see if she was living with or near them in 1861.

The probate entry for Jane Cole states that she was of 18 Calthorpe Place and that she died there.
On the 1861 census entry for the address it says " no one sleeps on premises - Ironmongers" ( crossed out ). 18 Calthorpe Place was also the family address in 1851 . Have the youngest family members been traced in 1861 ?

Her 2nd eldest son George's wife registered her death, they lived in Deptford.

Thanks for this.
Yes, Ellen Hannah Cole (her daughter in law) was the informant on her death, but they lived in Deptford.

I've now looked at the 1861 census for Calthorpe Place and it does show as unoccupied. I don't really understand this, they were there in 1851 and address shown on her probate in 1869 - where did she go in between?

I haven't managed to find all of the youngest family members in 1861 - still looking!

I couldn't find other family members either (apart from a couple who had left home)

I wonder if they were in the local workhouse for a while and that's why the address is unoccupied  :-\

Hi,

Unfortunately some of the pages are missing from the 1861 census including parts of Chelsea, maybe she was in one of those,

Looking of other Deans born c 1808 +/- 10 years I came up with a possible sibling for Jane.

1861 Census WILLIAM Dean born c 1810 Shenley, living in Middlesex also. Occp Park Keeper
1871 c 1818 South Mimms
1881 c 1818 South Mimms
1841 he is in Cheshunt, Herts age 21, Occp Gardener

1891 Elizabeth his Wife is Widowed, Daug Harriett from earlier Census is Sarah H Dean in 1891/1901.

Birth Reg Gro Index;
DEAN, SARAH  HARRIET, Mothers mn     STACEY
GRO Reference: 1842  S Quarter in WESTMINSTER  Volume 01  Page 404

Marriage Reg Sept 1841,  St Geo Han Sq 1 3
Elizabeth STACEY and William DEAN on same page

Unfortunately this Marriage does not appear on Anc so I cant confirm Williams Fathers name.

I though if we could find a Father for him and a Baptism he may have a Sister Jane born c 1809 Herts.

It was worth a try.
