Linda Tunney
« on: Monday 28 August 17 20:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am currently trying to locate my sisters grave. I know she is buried at the small graveyard behind St Helen's church Hoyland, Barnsley. I have been today to search but cannot find her grave. From past family history I know she is buried there , but in a grave with others. I know this is a long shot but would like to know of anyone who could help me locate the exact grave. Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you considered contacting the church authorities to see if they have the required information?

Yes, but a few weeks ago with no response. I did see a post from 2007 on here that mentioned someone had taken down all the information of the graves . They didn't want to put the personal email of that person on here.

How about writing to Barnsley Council to see if they can help?

Football, welcome to RootsChat  :)

Your sister Linda died early 1962 if I am looking at the correct death entry?

You say you have visited the cemetery, so hopefully you are local to do some further searches? It is very often so difficult to do these types of searches in cemeteries without further details like lair plans/numbers etc.

I spoke to one of the archivists, Graham, today on your behalf at Sheffield City Archives. He was so helpful. He advises that it best for you to go in and they can assist you in your searches (open Monday, Tuesday and Saturday to the public). He warns that there are some gaps in the burial registers around 1962 but there may be other searches that can be done that will help you identify the exact grave and location.

These are their details here www.sheffield.gov.uk/content/sheffield/home/libraries-archives/access-archives-local-studies-library.html

These look to be details below on the surviving records for the church of St Helen's RC in Hoyland held by the Sheffield Archives. www.sheffield.gov.uk/content/.../Roman%20Catholic%20Registers.pdf

Good luck with it all  :)

Monica
