8 Malew Street CASTLETOWN IOM
« on: Monday 28 August 17 23:06 BST (UK) »
I am searching for anyone who may have known or attended school with a George Douglas Jones he was born in Castletown  an only child, where his father also George known as "Dibby" ran a Grocers Shop they lived in a flat above the premises. George Douglas was born in 1922 and attended Douglas High School. He worked in the shop before joining the RAF in 1940, sadly George was killed when his plane crashed on a Training mission in 1942  six weeks before his 21st birthday. He is buried in Malew, where his father also ran a Sunday School at the Malew St Methodist Church.

Would like to find a photo of George or perhaps other families  who had men who joined RAF at same time and could have photos or details of George.

Thank you

Hi,

Here is his CWGC entry: http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/3058534/JONES,%20GEORGE%20DOUGLAS

It appears that from one of the documents on there that he was with 61 OTU RAF (VR). OTU is Operational Training Unit.

Link here to info re 61 OTU: http://www.rafweb.org/Organsation/OTU_3.htm
If you scroll down to the bottom of the page linked to above, 61 OTU should be at the top of your screen.

It would appear that 61 OTU were based at RAF Rednal near Birmingham, Warwickshire at the time of the crash.

Apologies if you already have this info, but hope it helps.

Kind regards

David

Hello David

Thank you for the links,  iam helping out someone who has a great interest in the plane that George Douglas Jones was flying when it crashed in Wales, a small part of the window panel was found and they are trying to piece together the life of young George and hopefully find a living relation and if possible a Photo of George.

I wondered if possibly there were other young men joining the RAF at that time from Castletown  and family could have old photos which may contain George, or from his schooldays at Douglas High School. in the mid 1930's

Thanks again

You might be better to post something on the IOM Family History Forum?
http://www.isle-of-man.com/genealogy/messageboard/

Or the Facebook page of the Isle of Man Family History Society?

There's a whole page of Jones' in the 2017 Manx Telecom Phonebook!

So, a good chance of finding family, I would say.

George Jones senior was born in Liverpool he married  Elizabeth Niblock also  born in Liverpool her mother was born in IOM,  sometime after the marriage in 1919 they moved over to the IOM  possibly with Elizabeths mother Elizabeth Esther Callin who is buried in Castletown.   As far as I know the Jones family had no connection with the Island and George junior b 1922 was an only child.

I just found a school with lecturn showing Georges death listed amongst others, do you know if ST.Ninians High School is the same as Douglas High school.

Yes it is.

ManxBMD has George Douglas Jones born in 1921, registered in Douglas.

During WW2, there were 3 RAF Airfields on the island: RAF Jurby, RAF Andreas and RAF Ronaldsway
