Hi,

I would like to know if there was a Trewirgie Corner in Redruth in 1945. I know there's a Trewirgie Road, Hill and Gardens now in Redruth but was there a Trewirgie Corner in 1945.
On the birthcert. I have it says that the place of birth was:

Trewirgie Corner
Redruth
Camborne-Redruth
U.D. (what does that mean ?)

the woman who gave birth was an unwed mother (child ill.)

Maybe there was a kind of "clinic" for unwed mothers ? Maybe the Trewingie Corner wasn't a street but a house ?

Any help grately appreciated.

kind regards

Looks like it was a Maternity Unit.

The Council has continued to deal vigorously with the problem of
providing sufiicient maternity accommodation in the County. During 1943
an Annexe to the County Maternity Ward was opened at Trewirgie Corner
in conjunction with the Camborne-Redruth Miners’ & General Hospital and
provided an additional 15 beds for maternity cases.

There is a newspaper reference in 1942 to it being adapted from a 'private residence', but can't yet find that on any maps.

Search for "Trewergie House with attached outbuildings, Redruth, Cornwall".
I wonder if this is where the maternity home was ...

I'm afraid I really don't know. I can see Trewirgie Corner being used as the name of a house in newspaper articles in the 1930's. I can't see it on any old maps, not find any evidence of where exactly it was or whether is was the same place as Trewirgie House.

You could try contacting the Cornish Studies Library which is in Redruth https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/community-and-living/records-archives-and-cornish-studies/cornish-studies-library/

Hi Dutch Miss Marple,

I stumbled across your post as I too am looking for information on Trewirgie Corner so was wondering if you found out any more information?

When I saw your user name it made me wonder if we were searching for information on Trewirgie Corner for the same reason as my reason has a Dutch connection.

I have been looking through British Newspapers for Trewirgie Corner, the earliest I found was in 1929.

It seems this was the home of the Wickett family.  Thomas Wickett was a involved with managing various mining companies and one of his daughters married a son of Lord Stamp (killed in an air raid in 1941).  They were in the house until about 1940 when it looks like the last of the daughters was married, then in August 1942 the maternity ward agreement is about to be signed with the Cornwall County Council.
