Flintshire Banns on FindmyPast question
« on: Sunday 03 September 17 10:36 BST (UK) »
does anyone know which specific church these relate to? I have a marriage in 1859 (David Griffiths and Elizabeth Williams 24th July) and according to the Marriage Certificate it is in the "Parish Church, Holywell". The Banns on FindMyPast dont actually say which church so I traced it back via the film number on FamilySearch and it is listed simply as "chapelry of bagillt" with no church name.

much thanks for any help
Gill

Interestingly, other couples on the same Banns page are also showing as being married at St James, Holywell on the NWales BMD.

It could be like the various other FindMyPast records showing (erroneously) as a different parish.

Interestingly, the second  page of the banns book has 'Parish of Holywell' written at the top. However, those who actually show as being married Bagillt in themarriag registers, show as St James, Holywell in the NW BMD.

Add - I did some of the transcriptions for the NWales BMD (not Flintshire) and we used the record office (Registrar's ) books.  A query to the records office might solve the puzzle.

According to Genuki:

The new parish of Bagillt was gazetted on 23 May 1844, having been created from the townships of Bagillt Fawr, Bagillt Fechan, Coleshill Fawr and Coleshill Fechan, which were formerly in the parish of Holywell.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Quite correct, BB, but there are problems with many of  the late separations of parishes in Denbighshire and Flintshire at this time  on FindMyPast - records allocated to either/or that don't check out e.g Pontfadog and Llangollen and Brymbo and Wrexham.

The only way to check is to look up the Clwyd FH booklets (via Jill Rose site or purchase) or buy the certificate.

PS - I check on the Clwyd booklets that I have but I don't have all the Flintshire ones.

Bagillt marriage booklets available from 1841 - 1911

Added - there are some Griffiths marriages showing in the Bagillt booklet (via Jill's site) but no first names  :-\

Are you able to go around the corner to the Clwyd FH Research Centre, WR, and have a wee look in the booklets ?
