Information required grandfather Samuel Edge
« on: Sunday 03 September 17 18:30 BST (UK) »
I have attached an image of my grandfather Samuel Edge. He was born in 1877 and died in 1950.
I was wondering if anyone could identify his uniform which would help me greatly in my research. Thanking you in advance.

Hi Woodland9,

Welcome to Rootschat!

Do you know where Samuel was born?  I ask because Find My Past has the service record for a Samuel Edge born in 1877 in Sheffield.  This document shows him serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery from 1895 until his  discharge in 1919.

Welcome to Rootschat

A Samuel Edge born 1875 died in 1950 in Nottingham - is that the right death?

Hi,

A very warm welcome to RootsChat!

The medal that Samuel is wearing is definitely the Queens South Africa Medal, with which he has also got five clasps to go with it. This medal was issued for service during the Boer War 1899-1902.

Info regarding the medal including pictures of the medal here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen%27s_South_Africa_Medal

It is unfortunate that the clasps cannot be read in the photo. In all 26 clasps were awarded, a list of the clasps with dates of battle/campaign is included in the wikipedia link above.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

The 1911 Census states Samuel was living in Nottingham, he declared that he was 34 years of age and was born in Staffordshire, nothing more specific than that I'm afraid. The information regarding his South Africa medal is very interesting and needs to be researched.

The Samuel Edge mentioned was an iron moulder at attestation (RGA). Joined at Dover & lived in Plymouth during WW1. Does this ring a bell.
Edit:
Oh dear, this Samuel Edge was at home 1898-03.

1875 would tie in with the free search for Samuel Edge & Caroline Edge in 1939 - Playing with it the birth month was May  :-\
