Hi. I'm new to RootsChat, so bear with me. I'm trying to trace my 3rd great granfather's parents and have come to a halt. This worries me as I think I may have gone along the wrong branch at some time, although everything seems to fit so far.
I have him marrying Sarah Bates 22 Oct 1832 at St Michael & All Angels Church, Appleby Magna. Entry 153 in the Parish Register does not give me any information of his parents. All the Census records 1841 - 1871 state that he was born in Hartshorne (but with varying dates) but I can find no trace of him being born or baptised in Hartshorne, or neighbouring villages, and therefore cannot find his parents.
The name is quite common in this area, but it seems as though there was a migration to this area, presumably for work in the mid 19th century in farming, but then mining became the main occupation and the families drifted away to areas with coal mines.
I know that there is a large generation of Glovers who originated in Devon. Most seemed to emigrate to the US but maybe some headed north, although I cannot find out for sure. There were some Glovers in Lancashire, but I cannot establish a connection.
If anyone has a clue as to where the Glover family came from and settled in Hartshorne for a few decades, then I would be very grateful.
There is also another mystery, for which I cannot find an answer. My great grandfather (also Joseph Glover) is buried at Christ Church Linton, along with his wife Frances Glover and one son Enoch and one daughter Alice and her husband Cyril Whibberley. For some reason each of these graves has been decorated with a 'christmas' type wreath, and it is evident from photos taken some years ago and some which I took in 2016 that these wreaths have been changed. I asked a local member of the church if they knew if anyone was connected to the Glover family, but no one knew anything. I did ask if they could put a note on the graves to ask whoever it was to contact them, and pass the message to me, but they forgot to put the note out.
I don't know whether RootsChat members can help me, but it's worth a try.
Thank you all very much.
