« on: Wednesday 06 September 17 10:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

Could somebody explain what a removal order was. John Burman bn Bradford-on-Avon in 1797 was issued with a removal order in Bradford Wiltshire on the 28th February 1826 he was removed to Clifton Gloucestershire with his wife Sarah. I am also looking for the marriage of John Burman to Sarah she possibly came from Devizes.

A removal order was issued by the Parish following a failed application for Parish relief.
They would have been sent back to their last known Parish.
I'm sure someone will give a legal definition.

That is what I thought as John was born & baptised in Bradford-on Avon & had two children baptised there I thought there might be another reason

That's a strange one if he was born there as this would have given him an entitlement to a settlement certificate. Maybe his father had a settlement certificate granted in another Parish that was not part of the Union (ie. Clifton). This would have been regarded as his place of settlement also irrespective of where he was born & so was removed to there.
That's my understanding. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.
