Croydon Workhouse inmate
« on: Monday 11 September 17 10:09 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm a newbie to RootsChat and hope someone can help me trace my great grandmother ..............
My great grandmother, Susan Lawrence, appears on my grandfathers birth certificate (b. 21/5/1887) as Mother, a Domestic Servant of Croydon and residence, Workhouse Infirmary Croydon. However, she is not listed as staff or an inmate in the 1881 Census, Queens Road Workhouse and Duppas Hill Infirmary. The father is not listed on the birth certificate and therefore my surname, Lawrence, appears to have originated from my great grandmother. I have a hunch who my great grandfather was but need to know more in order to verify certain information.
Is there an alternative record of inmates of Croydon Workhouse in 1887?
Thank you
Peter Lawrence

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

You might find this useful for some background to the workhouse but it is possible that your gt.grandmother went to the workhouse to give birth and was not resident there for any length of time.

Welcome to Rootschat.

You say that the address is given as Workhouse Infirmary Croydon rather than just Workhouse. That suggests to me that she was in the hospital part of the workhouse rather than the workhouse itself. Unmarried mothers often went there to have their babies. In later years the place of birth was often given as Eridge Road, Croydon (now the site of Croydon University Hospital) rather than Workhouse.

Thank you for this reply which seems to make sense. However, if Susan Lawrence was not a resident of the Workhouse, I can find no trace of her living elsewhere. Is this likely to be the end of my online searches and do I now need an expert to track her down further? If so, can you recommend anyone please?
Many thanks

Yes - the people on here!  Just give us as many details as you can, for instance what was your grandfather's name, and I'm sure someone will find her.
