Park Hill Colwyn Bay
« on: Monday 11 September 17 13:16 BST (UK) »
Hello.

I'm trying to find the location of Park Hill in Colwyn Bay.
I can see it in the 1891 census but there appears to be no prior or subsequent postings.

My specific address is:
9 Park Hill, Colwyn Bay (as do other houses on the road) has a name called Bryn Awel.

Not sure it can be THE Bryn Awel which appears as a historic building elsewhere, given my address is one of a series of houses.

It also is quite different to Park Road which has a separate 1891 listing.

Richard Shaw from Stoke on Trent born 1861, lived at #9 in 1891 with his wife Mary.

Many thanks
Neil

The house is still there today, if you put post code LL297UG into Google Maps it will show you Park Road, Colwyn Bay the house is a 6 bedroom, 3 story terrace with a black door & gate.  Bryn Awel is the name of the house from what I can see on the 1891 Census. The family also lived in No 63 on the 1911 Census.

Thanks Ellenmai though I don't think this is the address.

#9 Park Road exists on the 1891 census at the same time as #9 Park Hill.
Robert Leach (b. 1861) fro Rochdale residing at #9 Park Road in the 1891 census.
Could it be that nearby Hillside Road was once called Park Hill?

Btw its the address I'm interested in, rather than the Shaw family. My folks (Williams) were here in the late 1890s I'm hoping a family interest remained after the head of the family passed away in 1900.

The evidence is certainly confusing. One of the neighbouring families ,a Thomas and Priscilla Jones, are listed at No.10 Park Hill,"Harland House", in 1891.In subsequent censuses they are still listed at a "Harland House" but this is now given as Rhiw Road and 6,Rhiw Road(and only even numbers appear) respectively.

To add to the confusion there is this snippet, which combined with census data gives an address of
20 Woodland Road(East)
At least this has the right surname!

20 Woodland Road East is now combined with No.18,called "The Olives".According to the Google Earth image it is still owned by a Williams!

Thanks all - very interesting! My searches of newspaper sites online delivered nothing.
One of my Williams relatives was Anne Williams, daughter to Peter and Mary. All are buried down the road at Llansanffraid Glan Conwy.

Anne's grave inscription quotes 9 Park Hill as does the burial records of Peter, they died in 1899 and 1900 respectively.

Anne was married to an Owen Thomas !!!!!! Dare I suggest Anne was Mrs O Thomas?  :o
