John / Robert Berry in Little Hinton
« on: Saturday 16 September 17 20:06 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Having traced back part of my family tree to the Berry's that were in Little Hinton until around the 1800's, I became a bit stuck getting reliably beyond Virgil Berry - since the parish was rather small, I decided to just do a search for parish records in Little Hinton that mention "Berry" (there's only a couple of hundred), then see if I can fit them all together in a way that makes sense.

I've managed to do this reasonably successfully to a point, but have now hit a point where it looks like someone's name may be changing between John & Robert, and I'm wondering if this is at all possible?

The relevant records I've found are:

- Marriage between Robert Berry & Elizabeth, 16 Nov 1718
- Robby Berry baptised 9 Jun 1724, parents noted as Robert & Elizabeth
- Bridget Berry baptised 16 Feb 1728, parents noted as Robert & Elizabeth
- George Berry baptised 31 Jan 1730, parents noted as Robert & Elizabeth
- Francis Berry baptised 18 Feb 1730, parents noted as *John* & Elizabeth
- George Berry *buried* 20 Apr 1730, parents noted as John & Elizabeth

The discrepancy in George's parents is what I find most odd, as the fact George's parents are listed in his burial record at all makes me think it's the same George (at least the pattern I've seen would suggest parents are only generally listed if it's a child who dies.) I can't find any other relevant George's in Little Hinton either, nor a marriage between a separate John / Elizabeth.

However, the other thing that would point to them being separate Elizabeths is that Francis was baptised only a couple of months after George!

I feel like I'm probably missing something relatively big here - is anyone able to decipher any more or offer any clues?

Hi

Welcome to RootsChat :)

There are two baptisms which you may find interesting,

BAPTISM: George son of John Berry miller, and Elizabeth his wife was born 23 Oct. and bapt. 15 Nov. 1719

BURIAL: George son of John Berry miller was buried in woollen only 4 December 1720.

BAPTISM: George, son of John Berry miller & Elizabeth his wife was born 19 April and Baptised 3 June 1722.

So possibly this is the George buried in 1730.

Other baptisms, which definitely suggest two different families

Luke son of Robert Berry miller and Elizabeth his wife was born 30 Sept. and bapt. 3 Oct. 1719

*************************
Elizabeth dau. of John Berry miller, & Elizabeth his wife was born the 6th & bapt. 15 Feb. 1712
William son of John Berry miller, & Elizabeth his wife was born 25 June & bapt. 4 July 1715

POSSIBLE marriage for John Berry & Elizabeth Shailer at Preshute 2 Oct 1709.

Hi

I'm looking at the parish registers, the Robby you have baptised in 1724 is a daughter, - not sure what the actual name is - Polly, Bolly. I've enclosed an image incase anyone else can hazard a guess.

They do have a son Robert though.

Robert son of Robert Berry miller & Elizabeth his wife born 17th & bapt. 24 April 1723.

Thank you very much for finding those - that makes a lot more sense than if they were the same person, especially with the extra records that you found in the mix!

That has invoked another bit of a mystery though, in that I've found two John Berry's that could have reasonably been married to Elizabeth; the first was the son of John & Ann and the second the son of William & Sarah. Both were born in 1677, but I haven't found a way of differentiating the two! The only difference I was wondering about is the addition of "miller" in the records, but I believe all the Berry's were millers at that point (there was a Berry mill in Little Hinton which they had a copyhold on from Hinton manor throughout this time.) Is there anything I'm missing here?

Hi

I think it was the son of John & Ann that survived.

Baptism: John son of William Berry was baptised 7 January 1682

Burial: John son of William Berry was buried in woollen 29 April 1682
***************

When Francis Berry was baptised in 1730 John Berry & Elizabeth were of 'the Mill'.
The baptism before this in the register was George son of Robert & Elizabeth, no job title for him in this record, although earlier records say he was a miller.
