HMS MALAHNE.
« on: Thursday 21 September 17 13:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am hoping that someone can help me, my late father Reuben Felstead, naval number LT/JX301520 served on this ship (HMS Malahne). I am looking for any info of my fathers naval record and also record of HMS Malahne ie where did she patrol, what weapons did she have and are there any photo's of her. I read somewhere that she took part at Dunkirk. All i can find is this.

Welcome to rootschat :)

Might need to save my pennies for this one.

You may have to obtain your fathers records, an expert will no doubt tell you how to go about this

Your father's records will still be held by MOD:
https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/apply-for-someone-elses-records

Naval history.net has only passing mentions relating to casualties apart from to the one you have found already.

Very brief details here :  http://uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/13659.html

The link mazi provided would appear to confirm the Dunkirk story.  Not a bad snippet here:

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Hi
Essex Newsman
2nd October 1943
A piece written by Charles Douglas Brown includes
"When war came the Government requisitioned the yachts for various uses, The Malahne for instance was on patrol in the channel during Dunkirk. She is now on secret and important work....I can say no more."
It goes on to mention men from Tollesbury who served on the Malahne and gives their names.
Felstead not among the names at that time, but he may have come from elsewhere or served at a different time.

Chelmsford Chronicle 24th Sep 1943
"THe Malahne , one of the Navys smaller ships was on patrol in the channel during Dunkirk. She is now engaged on important work in collaboration with the Fleet Air Arm.Pilots frequently come on board to be taught the intricacies of seamanship and navigation.
The Malahne featured in the film Coastal Command disguised as a German Raider. Many of the shots were taken from her deck."

Built in 1937 by Camper & Nicholsons, Length 177' 0". Steel hull, Engines 2/840-HP MTUs, MALAHNE  was a luxury yacht. She had been refitted in the early 1980s but underwent a total rebuild in 2015. She was also known as "Narcissus", "Lev III" and "Adel". In August 2001, she was ranked 99th of the World’s 100 largest yachts. See here for photos, the final of which depicts her in wartime garb:

Then there's this:
http://www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/news/11863717.Pendennis_Shipyard_30_month_project_brings_yachts__back_to_life_/

In her Clyde-based wartime service, she served as a target vessel for torpedo-carrying aircraft. The torpedos, less warhead, were set to run deep.

Hello
I have just come across your request
My Father served on HMS Malahne from 1940 until the end of WW11He was a Leading Seaman Gunlayer
I have a photo of the entire crew and also a photo of the ratings messdeck. The boat was based in Lamlash for most of the war I also have a photo of her there
As you are aware the boat has been rebuilt since the war and has won awards for the best restoration of a classic ship. I was onboard  briefly again last week in the South of France.
I will post photos if you would like to see and also as soon as I have learnt to do it!
