I did a search on Freebmd for W. Tatton in Stockport..... there are surprisingly few entries.
BORCHARDT in Poland/Germany, BOSKOWITZ in Czechoslovakia, Hungary + Austria, BUSS in Baden, Germany + Switzerland, FEKETE in Hungary + Austria, GOTTHILF in Hammerstein + Berlin, GUBLER, GYSI, LABHARDT & RYCHNER in Switzerland, KONIG & KRONER in Germany, PLACZEK, WUNSCH & SILBERBERG in Poland.

Yes, but Tatton Hall was owned by the Egertons.

The area is known as Tatton, and the surname derives from it. You may know the parliamentary constituency of Tatton from the MPs Neil Hamilton, Martin Bell and George Osborne.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

Interesting how BBC news assumes the author is male.  Apparently the contents include recipes, household hints and tips, as well as moustache care and freckle lotion  ;D

In addition, although the book was found in a charity shop in Manchester, it doesn't mean that's where the author came from!

All true Mrs T..... however, one does need to make a start somewhere..... what would you suggest is the best approach?

p.s. I just tried freebmd again - births 1837 to 1850 ALL counties, and not a single female shows up!

Yes, Tatton Hall was owned by the Egertons, but Wythenshawe Hall was owned by the Tatton family.
Rutter, Sampson, Swinerd, Head, Redman in Kent.  Others in Cheshire, Manchester, Glos/War/Worcs.

If it is a woman and she is married she wouldn't have been born a Tatton though.
