Many thanks. I must admit I was hoping for more - e.g. was the he born out of wedlock and was RANDELL the mother's name? I was also hoping that the ambiguity of the father's name would be clarified. I've come across changes of surname before, but nothing like this. Any thoughts?

I would think it is highly likely that the child is illegitimate or in the timeframe baseborn. Parent surnames as named but no guess to which is which.

I'll see if I can find a later marriage between a RANDELL and a BENNETT.

Thanks for you efforts

Actually the entry reads:

Thomas the sonne of Thomas Randell als Bennett.

The "als" has a line above, a standard abbreviated form of "alias". So there is no suggestion that the younger Thomas was illegitimate. It is possible the father was, but there were other reasons why people had two surnames. Moreover, families often continued to use both for several generations, so the first "Randell alias Bennett" could be even further back.

David

Many thanks for seeking-out the original record for me.

I'd been deeply immersed in another root, so I've had to re-familiarise myself with this one.

For me, it runs:-

Elizabeth BENNETT bap 27 Oct 1756 in Stoke Damerel

her father            William BENNETT bap 6 Mar 1721 in Charles the Martyr

his father            William BENNETT bap 23 Jan 1682/3 in Moretonhampstead

his father            Thomas ???????  bap 28 Aug 1664 in St Sidwell, Exeter

his father             Thomas RANDELL alias BENNETT (ca 1640 somewhere!)

As the original gives precedence to RANDELL, I guess that I shall have to change my root to that name from 1664 backwards, and see if I can follow it any further.

Thanks again for your help.

In one parish I was looking at recently there were entries for "Evans alias Morris" and for "Morris alias Evans". So I don't think you can read much into the order of the names.

(Have you ruled out the Thomas Bennett baptised in Moretonhampstead in 1662 fot the father of William?)
